Why can a rubber gasket do the sealing?

Rubber sealing ring is a common sealing element, which is widely used in industry, automobile, aviation, medical and other fields. The function of the rubber sealing ring is to prevent liquid or gas from leaking or infiltrating between two adjacent surfaces, so as to ensure the normal operation and safety of the system.

There are many types and shapes of rubber sealing rings, and appropriate materials and structures can be chosen according to different working conditions and requirements. For example, silicone rubber sealing rings have the advantages of high temperature resistance, aging resistance, and chemical corrosion resistance; among them, rubber gaskets are one of the most widely used sealing types, not only good sealing effect, low material price, but also used in many industries , such as medical devices and infusion tubes in the pharmaceutical industry, engines and gearboxes in the automotive industry, equipment and pipelines in the machinery industry, etc.

Rubber gasket is a sheet-shaped rubber product, which can be directly cut into various shapes, such as circle, square, triangle, etc. The main function of the rubber gasket is to seal, to prevent gas or liquid from leaking or infiltrating from the gap between the two sealed parts. The rubber gasket can also reduce the pressure and prevent the sealed parts from being subjected to excessive axial force.

Sealing generally involves at least three parts, one seal and two sealed parts; the sealing surface of the sealed part seems to be smooth, but in fact, the surface is uneven from a microscopic point of view. If there is no seal, it is conceivable that when the two sealed parts are bonded together, there are actually many small gas or liquid channels on the bonding surface, which leads to leakage. For example, if the surface roughness of the sealing surface is 3.2 microns, such a surface is smooth enough to touch by hand, but the surface is still uneven from a microscopic point of view.

The rubber sealing ring is to isolate these uneven microstructures. In this way, gas or liquid will not pass through the sealing surface, that is to say, it can play a sealing role. The rubber gasket also has properties such as oil resistance, acid and alkali resistance, cold and heat resistance, and aging resistance, and can adapt to different working environments and requirements. But rubber gaskets can also become damaged or lose their elasticity over time and use, so they need to be checked and replaced regularly.

In fact, not only rubber, but also plastic and metal can be sealed. Rubber is often used in lower pressure environments, and medium and high usable plastics such as PTFE (a type of plastic). Copper and other metals can be used to seal the place of ultra-high pressure, but not everything is suitable for rubber pads. If the bottle of fat-soluble liquid (such as a sesame oil bottle) is not so good, it will not have such a good effect. After time, the rubber will absorb oil and become bigger, just like the water-absorbing balls played by children.

After understanding the rubber gasket, how to choose a good rubber gasket? The following aspects need to be considered:
- Working temperature: Different rubber materials have different heat resistance properties, and rubber gaskets that can maintain good elasticity and sealing at the highest or lowest working temperature should be considered.
- Working pressure: The rubber gasket should be able to withstand the working pressure and prevent it from being pushed or squeezed out by the medium. In general, O-rings are better suited for variable pressure applications than flat gaskets.
- Working medium: Different rubber materials have different properties such as oil resistance, acid and alkali resistance, and aging resistance. You should choose a rubber gasket that is compatible with the working medium and will not be corroded or deteriorated.
- Installation structure: The rubber gasket should match the installation structure to ensure sufficient contact pressure and sealing gap. The installation structure should also consider the convenience of disassembly and replacement of rubber gaskets.
- Economy: On the premise of meeting the sealing requirements, rubber gaskets with reasonable price, long service life and low maintenance cost should be chosen.

Rubber sealing gasket is an indispensable sealing element, which plays an important role in various fields.
